A USA Today BestsellerFrom the New York Times bestselling author of the acclaimed Immortal Guardians series comes an enchanting new series full of romance, danger, and loyalty: The Gifted Ones Since the day Lord Dillon earned his spurs, rumors of his savagery on the battlefield have preceded him into every room, stilling tongues and sparking fear. Weary of battle, he wishes only to find a woman he can wed who will approach him not with fear, but with the tenderness that has been absent from his life for so long. Yet only the wisewoman seems invariably at ease in his presence. Perhaps because she garners the same fear in others that he does himself. For seven years, Alyssa has been by Lord Dillon's side, counseling him from the shadows, healing him with her hands, and staving off the worst of his loneliness while his fearsome reputation keeps others at bay. Blessed--or cursed--with gifts that label her a sorceress, she is forced to conceal her youth and the love she harbors for him beneath umbral robes that lead Dillon and his people to believe she is the same aged wisewoman who served his father. All is revealed, however, and passions flare when an enemy threatens Dillon's life and Alyssa sacrifices everything to save him. When Dillon discovers that the wisewoman is far from elderly, he is instantly entranced. And, as he and Alyssa work together to defeat an enemy bent on destroying them both, Dillon will risk anything--even the wrath of his king--to be with her. "Book after book, Duvall brings her readers complex, fascinating tales of romance, danger and loyalty." --RT Book Reviews

From the Author Dear Reader, One of the questions I am asked most often is what inspired my Immortal Guardians series--paranormal romance novels and novellas that feature dark and dangerous heroes, kick-ass heroines, action, passion, and romance. The easy answer is: this book, A Sorceress of His Own. There were, of course, other sources of inspiration--a documentary on the water bear, research into possible explanations for the emergence of vampire folklore, and a biography of King George, to name a few. But long before Sarah Bingham rescued Roland Warbrook with her trusty shovel in Darkness Dawns, I wrote A Sorceress of His Own . . . and the gifted ones were born.Alyssa, the heroine of A Sorceress of His Own, was the first gifted one I created. And she, along with Seth, Roland and Marcus--all of whom appear in this book--fired my imagination and inspired many of the what ifs that drove me to create my Immortal Guardians. I am very pleased to bring you Alyssa's story. I hope you will enjoy it. And, for those who have read my Immortal Guardians books, I hope you will enjoy seeing Marcus as a mortal teenaged squire. --Dianne Duvall

Reading is a great escape for me especially when real life can be messy and complicated enough, thank you very much. Lately I've been tired of the same "He has issues but she can fix him or she has issues but he loves her despite them" story lines. What I was really looking for was a story where two strong, intelligent characters worked well together, respected and genuinely cared about each other, and held on through whatever fate threw their way. This story was that and more. The hero is smart, strong, fiercely loyal and dangerous, while the heroine is intelligent, a good strategist, and kind to others regardless how she's treated. She is a great match for the hero. Another reviewer mentioned that it was pretty light on the "paranormal" and a little heavier on the "historical". That may be true, but in no way does it detract from the story. I'm a huge fan of paranormal romance myself (bring on the demons, witches, sorcerers, vampires, shifters, angels, etc.) but the story line was so good that I didn't feel like I was missing anything. There was some sexual content but it wasn't gratuitous and was appropriate to the story line. The chemistry and love between these two characters was well written. I had foregone sleep and was late to work just so I could find out how it ended. I was not disappointed and got my HEA. Also, I really appreciate there was no cliffhanger and the book was complete, not broken down into multiple parts to be purchased separately. I'm really looking forward to reading about the other "gifted ones" and where their adventures might lead them. So, thanks Dianne Duvall. This story was like a warm chocolate chip cookie after a crappy day. Exactly what I needed.

Much to my great relief, this first book in her new Gifted Ones series, A Sorceress of His Own, did not disappoint. I think I loved Alyssa and Dillon's story as much as I loved Rowland and Sarah in Darkness Dawns. This series takes place in the late 1100s; years before her other series. Alyssa is just 16 when she dons her grandmothers robes and assumes the role as seer for Lord Dillon. Over the next 7 years, she keeps her identity hidden from him as her love for him grows. Even with him thinking she is a very old woman, a deep friendship and loyalty grows between the two. It is definitely a bonus for Dillon when he discovers that Alyssa is really young and beautiful. He quickly falls for her. The problem with this union is that Alyssa is not of royal blood, do the two can never marry. In that time, those things mattered. I was really rooting for these two to find a way to be together.I loved Dillon's character. Even before he knew who Alyssa really was, he tried to get the respect of his people for her. Even though she freely used her healing gifts to help others, they still scorned her and kept their distance thinking she was an evil old witch. Alyssa was an equally beloved character. I loved her attitude of " a gift not used is a gift wasted". The passion between the two was intense and lovely to watch. If you are a fan of the Immortal guardians series, you should be excited to know that some familiar faces show up in this book. I won't say who, i'll let you be surprised.IT is kind of cool to see favorite characters in their earlier beginnings. I haven't seen a hint of who is next up in this series, but I can't wait to find out!

A Sweeping Saga like story setting the groundwork for the wonders of the Gifted Ones By Shauni Originally Reviewed For: Tea and BookDianne Duvall takes us on an epic adventure through King Richard's England. Caught up with all the mysteries and superstitions telling a tale of secret passions that defy all, be they friend or foe, serf or king. A love story that rises from what could be to what is..When little more than a child, Alyssa donned her grandmother's robes and became the "wisewoman" for Lord Dillon. At 16 she was strong enough to hide a burgeoning love and step into shoes that should have been to great to fill. Ever looking for ways to keep Dillon safe, Allysa has closed herself off to all others. Allowing the suspicion and scorn to reign supreme. Always afraid of allowing others to see her true self. Until tragedy struck and Allysa's healing of Dillon all be destroyed them both.Lord Dillon, Earl of Wescott has known the wisewoman his entire life. She served his father and grandfather and he is more than a little confused as to why he is so drawn to her. His trust in her is without a doubt but the connection that grows daily between them? That's another story. For seven years she has been at his side, his anchor in so many ways. But an ambush leaving him near death teaches him just how loyal she has been to him and what he almost lost. This was more than a medieval romance this story had power.. The power to draw me in, to reveal the gifts given and to want to hold tight to the loyalties shown. While prejudice and superstition ran rampant in this book, they should have this was the 12th century after all, the power of love and loyalty managed to conquer even that. One thing I really appreciated was the fact that while Dianne made several of the priests corrupt and evil, lost to superstition and greed, she didn't make all priests out to be so. She carefully crafted what I would consider accurate portrayals of the clergy at that time, or anytime really, some good, some bad.. some men of their times and some able to look beyond the obvious. The one thing I was disappointed in was the fact that the Immortal Guardians, Seth and Roland were very minor characters. I wanted them to be huge players, to explain more of the what ifs? But I think Dianne has other plans and their importance may show as the series grows. But really that is such a minor thing and if that's all I didn't like? Well that means there were pages and pages and pages of things I loved!A Sweeping Saga like story setting the groundwork for the wonders of the Gifted Ones. Alyssa's brother and sister are sure to play a large part in future books as should Dillon's brother Robert.. Of course I don't really know how the mind of Dianne Duvall works but I am excited to see what will happen next. This story might be just another day in the mind of Dianne Duvall.. but it was a delight to me! Loved it!ShauniThis review is based on the ARC of A Sorceress of His Own, provided by the author for an honest review.
