About the Author In the early 1900s, S.D. Gordon was a widely traveled speaker in high demand. A prolific author, he wrote more than 25 devotional books, most with the phrase "Quiet Talks" in the title. His first book sold half a million copies over 40 years! He died in 1936. E.W. Kenyon said that "S.D. Gordon is a sporadic outburst of divine grace. He is unusual, as are all of God's rare tools... he is perfectly balanced in the Word and in the Spirit. He represents that rare but vanishing class of spiritually minded men of the last generation." "The Treasury of Quiet Talks Selections from S.D. Gordon" (1951) by John W. Bradbury gives this brief biography (adapted): "Samuel Dickey Gordon ministered the deep things of God, he was not an ordained minister, He could boast no academic degrees, he was never doctored [he never received an earned or honorary doctorate]. Theological concepts he obtained from his Bible. A plain man, controlled by a deep desire to edify God's people, he won the respect of the learned and at the same time the affection of the simple. "Gordon lived a long and useful life. He was born in Philadelphia August 12, 1859 and died June 1936. A public school education was all the academic training he had. But, as a young man, he was hard working , consecrated and sought the best God had for him. He served as assistant secretary of the Philadelphia Young Men's Christian Association in 1884-86 so efficiently that he became state secretary for the YMCA in Ohio, serving from 1886 to 1895. In this period he developed a quiet style of devotional speaking which was quite the opposite of the powerful forensics which dominated the pulpit style of that period.

Planned for 12...28 showed up, clearly thirsty for fresh conversation and meaningful connection. Although there are "helps" for each conversation, the author is clear about emphasizing that there is no right or wrong way to have these conversations. As I wandered through the room where groups of 4 or 5 women gathered at tables with gourmet coffee, I kept hearing, "We better hurry, we've got to get to the next step." I would gently touch shoulders, reminding them there was no right or wrong way to do "Praise and Coffee to Go!" This experience confirms that Praise & Coffee to Go! is so necessary. Women everywhere need to be encouraged that conversations about God don't have to feel like a "program!"

About the Author In 1994 I made a huge career change. I quit my job and decided to open a bar. Not just any bar, but a gay/lesbian show bar. I immersed my entire being in the nightclub scene and found myself living a life of excess. I drank too much, ate too much, partied too much, and spent much more money than I had. After 17 years of abuse, my body almost self-destructed. At one point, I found myself weighing in at 528 pounds, an alcoholic, broke and alone. I remember the night when a friend drove me home after pounding down a fifth of liquor at my club. It was a freezing cold January night. I stepped out of the car and slipped and fell in the driveway. I shattered my wrist in three places that night. Unable to lift my 400 pound bulk up off the ground, even with the help of my friend, I sat there in the freezing snow until after about an hour, I eventually crawled into my house and fell asleep on the floor. I woke up the next morning and sat there on my little corner of “rock bottom” feeling very sorry for myself. I was repulsed and ashamed of what I had become. On January 15, 2012, I had an epiphany. I was forced to face the reality of my mortality and I was mortified. In, 2012, I quit drinking completely which was truly difficult, in that I still owned a bar. I lost a total of 252 pounds and went back to college after 25 years. I am also a loud and proud lesbian. I have lived life to the highest of highs and hit the lowest of lows. I am still searching for my middle ground. , I have completely turned my life around. I am not who I was three years ago. I like to write and create. My passion is to communicate, educate and motivate. Recently, I lost my best friend and my greatest supporter, my mother. She was never one to whine or engage in self-pity. Despite all of the hardships she herself endured, she managed to raise 4 very strong, independent and successful children. When we were overwhelmed with stress, love and life she would sit us down and calmly say “Pick a struggle cupcake….and resolve it”. I did…I have….and now I would love to share some of my experiences, struggles, failures and triumphs with you. . There is always an answer, an escape or a solution. We just have to find it! This book is as awesome as the first Pick a Struggle By Anne Frank This book is as awesome as the first Pick a Struggle, with some pretty poignant stories with inspirational endings. The descriptive depiction of the author's feelings as well as the scenario in which she finds herself in allow the reader to relate to her struggle and perhaps note some of their own. I particularly enjoyed "Racing the Moon" as it relates to a place in life where we feel we need something more. Great book!

By Lorraine Darrell Enjoyed reading the Westmoreland Series 1-5, 6-10 and now individually as I had already read book 14. So I back tracked to 11 and now reading 12. I do like to read in the series order and I like that the author already has books written for me to continue the series, especially being I am right into the flow of the series.

I love her romance novels.I am looking for her to write some novels for mature couples (us baby boomers). We look good and have a lot of passion too so I'm hoping to find such a novel in Brenda Jackson's repertoire.

By Cool Stuff on Amazon This is Book 4 in the amazing Lord of the Bears series that tells the smoking hot tale of Logan, a bear shape shifter, and his human soul mate, the lovely and voluptuous Jenny. In Book 4, there’s a meeting of the Council of Shape Shifters where two of the members voice a desire for revenge against Logan.They set out into the woods one night and set his beautiful Ferrari on fire to draw him out of his cabin. Logan makes short work of the battle and sends them packing. But those two aren’t finished. They come up with a plan that threatens to destroy Logan and Jenny’s relationship starting with a confrontation on a very special day. I was not expecting all these twists and turns, nor this brilliant ending. As usual, all along the way Logan and Jenny’s romantic encounters are steamy, sexy, smoking hot, and make you wish they would never end.Jess Hayek knows how to write a smoking hot story with characters you care about and with endings you’ll never guess. I love this series and look forward to more. I highly recommend this. Once you get into this series, you’ll be hooked.

Talk about ratcheting up the intensity.In this installment, the council is out for blood. Logan’s blood, to be precise.It turns out that while he was busy protecting Jenny in the last book, he was also making some enemies along the way. A confrontation ensues, but Logan won’t be so easily defeated. The question is, will he be able to protect Jenny from the danger lurking around every corner?This book packed a little bit of everything into it. Action, suspense, steamy hot scenes, and even some very sweet romance between Logan and Jenny. I really liked that when someone tempted him with an alternative that had me biting my nails as it played out, Logan didn’t even have to think twice. His love for Jenny was clearly written, and I’m excited to read more of this series.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. One Wild Wedding By Ravyn Karasu I have some mixed feelings about Lord of the Bears 4. On the one hand, I was very eager to read it and the premise was really, really good. The action scenes, while still not perfected, have improved since Book 3. I like the characters and the concepts. I do have to address the character of Vanessa though. I’m actually not worried about her just showing up with great convenience. I’ve come to accept that sort of pattern. What bothered me was her animal (cheetah), and how she was utilized. I suppose to most readers, this won’t make a difference, but it did bug me to wonder “How did Vanessa survive in her animal form during this battle?” Cheetahs are not known to be very strong fighters. They abandon a place to avoid a fight as fast as possible, knowing they stand little to know chance. I was also wondering how she climbed trees when cheetahs have paws more like a dog and cannot retract their claws the same way as most cats. She wouldn’t have been able to climb the trees. BUT, that is my major nitpick on that. If you aren’t as aware of the mechanics of the cheetah, this should slide by you without a problem.The pacing is a bit wobbly for me. There is a big build-up the reader expects that should explode in the end. That didn’t happen. It just ended way too clean with very little opposition (in the end. The beginning had a lot of opposition). It just felt really awkward and out of place, considering the weight of the situation. I think there was a lot of missed opportunity, and I’m under the assumption that something is going to happen in book 5 to make up for this fizzle of a climax. The way the stories are strung together on tight timelines, I can see how this would work, overall, but it does kind of hurt this particular book on its own since so much was put on it. It felt as if the book could not handle its own plot well enough. It was frustrating.Don’t misunderstand that for the book being terrible though. That’s why it’s frustrating. This book in the series was actually very good and promising. It just didn’t quite handle the basket of ingredients as well as I had hoped. As I said before though, it makes me really wonder what’s going to happen in book 5, since book 4 had elements that were just so awkward. So it’s very possible the next book will smooth it all out better. Still a very nice read with good story concepts. Little fast (you knew I was going to say that if you’ve seen my other reviews of the past books), but this wasn’t quite as jarring as the others. In some ways, this is the better book. It feels a lot longer due to the amount of story taking place. It’s certainly a lot more memorable in its bulk in the first half than the other books. So the awkwardness, while still apparent, is nowhere near as distracting as in the second half where things are so much slower and calmer, and it makes some things just stick out a bit more.It’s worth the read. I’ve enjoyed it and I’ve actually gotten rather attached to this series and some of its quirkiness.

Excerpt from Osteopathy, Research and PracticeIn working out the general scheme of this book I have considered the human body in sections, or regions. I have classified the effects of abnormalities of the human body, or the so-called diseases, upon a basis of nerve and blood supply and the region affected. Often the line of separation cannot be closely drawn, as will be seen in my discussion of the condition. I have considered the most general diseased conditions of the regions of the head, neck, thorax, abdomen and pelvis. Some conditions being more extensive in their effects do not properly fall into any of these classes but belong to the region above the diaphragm. Others belong to the region below the diaphragm; while others general in character, are spoken of as spinal. For convenience in referring to contagious diseases and fevers I have grouped them under a separate heading.I have omitted all cuts and pictures because the reader of my practice is supposed to have in his mind an image of every bone, muscle, nerve, organ and part of the human body. His thorough anatomical and physiological acquaintance with the body makes it useless to have illustrations in this work. On your table are fully illustrated works on anatomy by able authors. Osteopathy, Research and Practice (Classic Reprint), by A. T. Still

About the Author Andrew Taylor Still (1828-1917) was the founder of osteopathy. His father was a doctor and Methodist preacher who moved with the American frontier, which meant that Still grew up in Virginia, Tennessee, Missouri and Kansas. After studying medicine with his father, Dr. Still began his own practice in 1854. He and his family were firm abolitionists and he served briefly in the Civil War. After three members of his family died from spinal meningitis in 1864, he became disillusioned with conventional medicine and started his search for a better way to practice. He discovered the principles of osteopathy in 1874. Shortly afterwards he settled in Kirksville, Missouri where he lived for the rest of his life. It was there, in 1892, that he established the first osteopathic school, the American School of Osteopathy.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Good Bones By Peter P. Fuchs So much of what is termed natural healing in America had its start with Dr. Still. He is a figure of such eminenceto the development of the idea of the body healing itself, that is hard to over-state it. The genesis of many other therapies, Chiropractic, Rolfing Structural Integration and other structural therapies is in Osteopathy. Though there are certainly precedents for some Osteopathic insights (Swedenborg's notion of the movement of cranial bones), the fact is that Dr. Still was a great innovator. Goodman's introduction is quite informative and well organized.( Some of the curiously offbeat machinations of early Osteopaths are described in other texts and make, occasionally, for amusing reading.) A familiarity with this seminal text is important for a notion about howmuch we have lost in contemporary culture in the innate regenerative power of human beings. So while with this book alone you don't get a full picture, it is an inspirational place to start.

If you have an interest in living pain free, you should check out this book and a good osteopathy practitioner!

Neel I bought this book not because I feel I am an atheist but because I was feeling the need for deeper meaning in my spirituality. I read this book slowly, going over passages again and again in mindful meditation. I love the honest expressions of doubt and even the very real and honest self pity that we all go through as we tackle the challenges of life. Interwoven with scripture that fit each section perfectly and which remind me of the great poetic beauty of the Bible, this book lifted me up daily. I work a 12 step recovery program and this book should be a part of this type of recovery practice as we all search for our "Higher Power", forgiveness, and most importantly gratitude. But not only for those in recovery of any illness, it is a book that reminds us of proof that we are a part of a beautiful and intricate design , that through the pain and suffering, we are loved and protected, and that faith IS an individual journey, discovered in ones own time and way. Yet, it is a moving reminder that without faith, we are missing an integral part of our humanity. We do not need to understand fully this divine world or His divine plan, but we need to embrace the glory of it all by opening our hearts to the the great love and peace that can be found by believing.

By FilmBuff18 This is a very personal story of a journey to faith. What I most admired in Dana's telling is the thoughtful all inclusive exploration that finally leads her closer to an inner resolution. To my mind, the answers she ultimately finds within aren't as important as the methods she uses getting there. This is not a book that offers universal easy answers, which do not exist for a deep thinker (like Ms. Watts), but instead poses questions that beg for exploration. This would be a good book for follow up discussions, and therefore I would think a faith-based book group might find it an excellent choice.

Recognition of the cancer's presence brings fear and doubt and emptiness. Skye has been on the streets for years after running from a nasty situation at her Aunt and Uncle's home. She had been living there since her parents died. Mick is taken by the small feisty woman with eyes the color of a sunset. He falls for her and soon her past catches up with her. A wonderful ending and great book.

By Adrienne This was a complete impulse getting this, but I was surprised by how much I got out of this little book! The beginning gives an immensely thorough walk-through that helps you understand inflammation, what it means, and what it does. It's really helped me get my head around this whole anti-inflammatory diet that I've been hearing about, which is becoming rather "hip" these days.The explanations of inflammation and how it connects to health and diet made incredible sense, and seemed to be intensively researched by the author with a lot of medical information - but reiterated and re-worded by Ms. Reeves in an very simple, easy-to-understand way. I loved the Remedies/Diet Tips section at the end. All of it made sense, and inspired me to think about implementing them! While I do see that sources weren't referenced like the previous reviewer mentioned, I've had discussions with other experts about food and medicine, and did some of my own fact-checking - it all seems pretty legit, and certainly none of it raised any alarms.For starters getting into the anti-inflammatory trend, this is an excellent first step in my book. Definitely a primer to get you started on reading more and doing your own research, but this book truly helps you connect the whole thing together all in one place as a good beginning. I've already started making changes to the way I eat and view food!

The author makes numerous comments about research - " studies and empirical knowledge" - etc. But at no point does she actually identify or cite references for that research. She should. Including the sources for her claims would make this a much better book.
